My main source of comedy is Youtube. Therefore you can conclude that I am probably cheap! However I do feel that some of the newer stand up shows on Netflix seem to be a bit too aware of themselves. There are exceptions to this rule. Louis CK is generally note perfect no matter what he does and where he does it. He is a favourite of mine. Mind you, if you dislike white men using the N word indiscriminately give him a wide berth.
Continuing on the trend of endangered middle aged white men who look a bit Irish, I am a big fan of Bill Burr. Burr is probably going to get himself into hot water one of these days with a feminist. Or Democrat. Or both. I don’t find him to be as engaging in his stand up routines nowadays. His netflix shows are a bit loud for my liking. I think his finest hour probably came here with a post election sit down with a group of his peers. Without getting into over analysis it’s a masterclass in owning the room. For the hour or so that he is on, others are coming and going. Joe Rogan is in awe of him.
Now for someone completely different. Stewart Lee. He is about as far away from the other two guys as you can get. He deals in miserablism, freely dispensing insults to other comedians who make their living on Comedy Central UK specials. One of his favoured techniques is start into an anecdote and improvise and justify the end of the story based on audience reaction. Even when it seems he has lost it he drags it out of the fire. It’s like something altogether more challenging but the rewards are plenty if you can find his groove.
I think my first exposure to Sarah Silverman was her declaring to her then boyfriend Jimmy Kimmel that she was fucking Matt Damon. Anyway I haven’t been following her religiously since then but on the occasion that I do see her I am impressed. Her schtick is what I’d describe as bait and switch, plenty of shock value and plenty of allusions to her heritage. She is filthy really, not much chance of putting one of her shows on at your folk’s house over the Christmas holidays. Look watch some of this and see what you think.
I might add some more to these over time….
